Does your Macbook Randomly Shutdown?

My wife’s new 1.83 Ghz Macbook with 1GB of factory installed RAM just started randomly shutting down. What a pain! I started this site to discuss the issue. Is this happening to anyone else?
I plan to start posting our trevails with the issue on this site – enjoy and let’s get this resolved! There are many reports of some of the new Macbooks doing this.
According to the Apple support site though, there aren’t any official answers it appears. Go figure. We are headed the Genius bar on Saturday to tackle the issue – wish me luck 
I also found a great thread over at Macworld with users experiencing similar issues – hopefully Apple will address this issue for everyone since we are all still under warranty at this point.

Yes, it does. Actually it started right after the firmware update for the MB that was supposed to fix fan behaviour.
Well, ever since I installed it, my MacBook’s has shut down randomly.
I’ve actually managed to create a foolproof way of making it shutdown, and thought that maybe som of you guys can make anything of this:
My MB shuts down only after it’s been stressed, in other words, after I’ve pushed the CPU to its max. And it doesn’t shut down while it’s going on 100% (I used “yes > /dev/null” in Terminal to push it to its limits), rather, it shuts down after I kill the process in Terminal.
The fans start to slow down, and the temperature drops. Then, when everything seems fine, the fans quickly rev up to “really loud”, and the MB shuts down.
I’ve managed to replicate this exact pattern for five consecutive times now, always with the exact same result.
So, if anybody knows what this behaviour might suggest, please, I’m all ears!

As a Windows Admin, I wanted curiously to know, what about the new intel based Macs. As my wife wanted to have a Notebook we decided to have one of the new MacBooks.
The first one died 1 1/2 Week after first use, thats quit good for a Computer without a working fan.
The second one worked nearly the same time fine – after then it couldn’t switched on anymore.
Atfter this repair we wait what happens next – will it work the next year or will it crash again? When this happens, it will be fixed by replacing with a HP…

My MacBook also shutdown randomly. sometimes after a view minutes, sometimes i could’t start it up. after 3 weeks i got it back from the service center (motherboard was not deliverable by apple) i got it back “with a new motherboard”. checking the case i now know they changed the whole machine. everything new , except hdd and memory.

My MacBook Pro also decided to shut down randomly, especially when it was hot in the bureau.For a new Laptop this is really a Desaster – when i think how much i pay to get Apple Computer.
Also the Firfox Browser is most of the time very slow – and i have 2 GB RAM installed.
I think they should work less on Design and more on the Quality of their Products. Every machine of the last years had problems with heat and ventilation, some mm more like the thinkpads would not disturb me, if they came near the thinkpad quality this way. With my T42 i had never one of this problems, and they are much more durable.
I have seen so much Powerbooks with demolished Alu – ist really Design for Designers, but not for hardcore Users.

a similar problem also happens with old g4 powerbooks and I had it only when I was in hot countries ! in Europe it never shut down(went into sleep mode), only India and Africa at temperatures around 40 degrees Celsius. My powerbook got a new sleep sensor and motherboard and I will only be able to confirm if it was repaired once I am back in Africa or India. Sometimes the defect only shut off Firewire and USB bus power, sometimes it went into sleep mode every minute, sometimes every 10 seconds….I always keep the bottom raised by placing 2 pieces of wood under it so the heat can not build up. The more powerful these items get the more heat is the problem !

my macbook shutsdown randomly.
It has happened both with and without external power. It happens on average once a day.
Sometimes the computer has problems restarting after such a random shutdown.
I’m sending it in to Apple. They say that it will take about three weeks (!) to fix it…
Otherwise, it’s a pretty nice computer…

My Macbook shut down randomly, as well. It’s at Apple for repair right now. It went in on August 24, and it’s now Sept. 9. I called today and they said it’s a heat sync issue!! I hope it will not take three weeks! Apple, wake up! You can’t treat your customers like this. You need to work on compensation, NOW!!

i have the same problem with my macbook. it started about four weeks after i got it. it just shuts off suddenly, sometimes a few times in a row.extremely annoying!

Same problem with our macbook pro. Went in to be fixed and the logic board was replaced. Two weeks later, it began shutting down again. Took it back to Apple and they said they think its now a heat sync problem. We asked for a new machine, and they have ordered it for us. This was a week ago. They are also transferring all of our photos and itunes from the first machine, since we could never get the macbook to stay on long enough to copy everything onto disc.

Same problem here, usually in late/early hours and after being in sleep mode for any length of time.
For those of you having problems rebooting it after this occurance hold the power button down until the machines emits a loud beep.
I shall be sending mine back to apple as soon as, but as i use it for work every day it will be hell without it.

Same here. I shut down my MacBook and itappears to shut down fine, but when I go to restart it sometimes when the power adapter is not plugged in it will not boot. then I plug it up and it will boot, but the batter is drained all the way! And I know when I shut it down before it was fully charged. I have no idea why this happens, but would like to get it fixed ASAP. Alas, like other people here I would hate to be without it for 3 weeks because I use it daily.

Yep, me too. Two weeks ago I installed boot camp to play some decent Windows games. Shutdowns started yesterday (twice) and today (way more than twice). Perhaps the failure really is heat-related. The MacBook gets pretty hot whilst gaming.

Mine has been doing the same. Shutting down after only a few secs or minutes of being on. An Apple centre near me said they would happily repair it within three days but lo and behold it hasn’t happened while it has been in the shop so they can’t do a thing! And I can’t replicate the problem. So it looks like I am going to get it back the problem is going to continue and I am just going to have to take it back to them every now and then and hopefully the problem will occur at least once while they are there before the warranty runs out!!!
Apart from this i love my macbook and hate being without it!

My first MacBook suffered from Random Shutdowns but was repaired and finally replaced by apple. Because i did still not trust the platine-layout i selled it and bought a new dual 2 core Macbook.
Today after 3 Weeks i had my first sudden shutdown. During watching a DVD the MacBook suddenly shut down. It was running on Battery and had about 80% battery power left.
Yeah, welcome back in the club of MacBooks that are working 1a … or stop working whenever they like.

Yup – same here. My brother purchased his MacBook about 4 months ago and it has been a constant problem. Apple keeps taking it away and “fixing it” but every time it comes back, it still has the same problem. Unbelievable! Why don’t they accept the laptop has a problem and exchange it? This is clearly not an isolated problem. Apple should have it’s arsed sued. Everyone can make mistakes, but to not take honest responsibility for them is BAD FORM.

i purchased a macbook 2.0ghz black and i experience the same thing, except mr shut downs arent so random. When the macbook goes to sleepmode, and when i restart it, thats when the problem occurs.
I took it into a tech center recently and they replaced a logic board but the problem still occurs intermitenly.

I bought my macbook about four months ago. everything worked ok until some days ago:
the first day showed one random shutdown, the second three – and today I`m at three and counting.
the problem is definitely NOT down to overheating (as I first thought), as I had only started working on the macbook today when it shut down on me repeatedly.
this is a real hassle – if apple don`t get this definitely fixed and quickly, then this will have been my very last mac.
I`ll keep the readers of this forum informed on any “progress”…thank God I now at least know that I`m not in this alone…

I’ve been an Apple disciple for the past 12 years with no problems. I got myself a Powerbook G4 and in the first 9 months I went through about 20 hours on the phone with AppleCare in the US and UK because I was travelling a lot, and ended up going through 2 faulty screens, 3 faulty logic boards and having all my ports die.
Apple was very helpful and replaced the Powerbook with a Macbook Pro 2.16GHz. This one worked great, for the first few months. Now, I have gone through about 6 hours on the phone, a month of downtime(which is intolerable, as my life and business revolve around my computer!) 3 faulty screens, 2 I/O boards, 2 Logic Boards, 1 Power adapter and DC power board.
I am sceduled to take it into an Apple Reseller near me due to the I/O board failing again, and last night it began randomly shutting down on me, fully charged and plugged in.
So I restarted it…
I entered my password and was back in business for about 2 minutes. It shut down again.
So I restarted it…
This time it froze while I was entering my password.
So I restarted it…
And decided to try to reset the PRAM. It made the startup sound over and over, like a skipping CD, for about 2 minutes.
So I restarted it…
It froze when as I entered my password.
So I restarted it(this is crazy.)…
It got to the “Starting OSX” bar, and shut off.
I’m in the UK, but I called AppleCare in the US, because customer service is a foreign thing over here. I talked with them for over an hour, with no real resolution or replacement, but much friendly empathy and an Escalated Case Number and many more notes to my case file, so it was a worth it.
So I left it over night.
This morning I started it up, typed in my password, got on and it shut off in about 1 minute, and was quite a bit hotter than usual, as it was the previous night.
I have read a lot about these types of problems today and I made a tick list of things to check, and the first was the battery. So I pulled the battery out, plugged in the computer and it has been up and running for the past 20 minutes so far.
So, if anyone else is having this trouble try running it without the battery installed. But I certainly do understand the pain and annoyance this can all cause!!!
I am seeking to get another replacement machine, but so far the UK Apple Care has been stingy and seemingly annoyed at my requests for resolution. So, remember that the squeeky wheels gets the greese. Call and call and call. If you hit a wall with one Apple Care person, call back and get another. It may take hours, but you may just get your way.
I have never used PCs, and I never will, but I do hope Apple resolves these issues soon! Good luck to all of you MacAddicts who are diligently and faithfully suffering through Apple trials!
