Hi everyone! First of all, I wanted to thank everyone who has registered so far on the site! Please continue to sign up and be sure to make some official posts to the site on your experiences with how you are addressing your issues and how Apple is handling them.
I am proud to say that since my post about getting the Macbook heatsink fixed, we are up and running just great with no problems so far. We are keeping our fingers crossed that this fixed the issue.
Cheers!

Good to hear your MacBook has so far been problem free. Mine had a series of random shut downs 3 days ago but it hasn’t done it since. So I’m not too sure if I’m up for sending it to Apple yet.

Hope it’s okay to doublepost. I already replied a bit further down, but would like to get my question answered, so here it is again:
“Well, my MBâ??s now at my Apple reseller here in Finland, and the guy whoâ??s in charge of repairs said that he would change the logic board.
Do any of you guys know if the heatsink is part of the logic board? Cause if it isn’t, it would suck, I mean really suck, if they changed the logic board and not the heatsink, and Iâ??d be getting back a (still) dysfunctional MacBook.
Thanks in advance,
Jon”

Jon, Looking at the posts on the Apple Discussions Forums, Apple have not replaced the heat sink in all MacBooks that had random shutdowns. Some MacBooks have had just the RAM replaced, some just the hard-drive, some just the top case…
Either Apple is trying to fix this problem by trial and error or this random shutdown problem is not nessarily caused by one and the same component/s in all MacBooks. Only time will tell.
Until then, I am more inclined to think that Apple is having a trial and error game with those MacBooks, because a lot of MacBooks with random shutdown problems have had to be sent for repairs MULTIPLE TIMES after that have come back from Apple.

well…mind if I jump in the boat with you all. I experienced my first random shutdown last night in a masters class. I was in the middle of taking some important notes and then that depressing whiz of the fan and a black screen entered my life. This is very depressing, I hate it that so many new Mac people are experiencing this, I am a long time Mac user and this glitch wont change my mind but I hope they remedy this soon for all those new Mac users.
cheers

I too am a long time mac user, and boy do i feel terrible. i gave a speech in a public speaking competition at my school this year about why everyone should switch to macs and I managed to convert 70+ people. I know of at least 1 person in this pool who is now suffering from this problem like myself.
Anyways, Apple is currently repairing my heat sink though the part is on order. I wonder if there’s a way for us to find out the percentage of macbooks with replaced heatsinks that regress versus those that are fixed. Would be interesting and very useful.

Does anybody else get these color bars after random shutdowns? http://tinyurl.com/zco4d

Yes, those color lines happened to me after forcing my macbook to turn on (from RSS) for 2 months. I decided to finally send mine in at that point. You can force your macbook to boot by holding down the following keys all at once: command, option, “p”, “r”- then hit the power button to turn on your machine.
Your macbook will then reboot once or twice (depending on how long you hold down those keys) and will start up OSX like normal.
