Question on how to best deal with RSS

September 30th, 2006 6 Comments »

Does anyone have any tricks or work-arounds that might discourage RSS while I’m waiting to take my MacBook in for repair? For example, I’ve found that my computer comes out of sleep mode with no trouble (i.e., without crashing) as long as I leave iTunes running when the computer isn’t in use. Also, holding down the power button until I hear the screech of death and forcing the computer to run on one processor helps prevent RSS.

The reason I’m asking is that since RSS, I’ve been using my laptop more as a desktop, treating it very gingerly, not moving it around, making sure the power cord is always plugged in so it wont have to run on battery, etc.

I hate feeling tethered to the electrical outlet!

Any suggestions or am I stuck here, in this chair, when I should take my work outside on the back deck?

I happened across this site while looking for a good deal on a macbook. I am now saving my money until i can get a guarantee of no RSS. I just wanted to let you all know that this site has served to warn a would-be buyer, and if it takes too long, a former mac user.

My MacBook developed RSS around 2 months after purchase. Went to the Apple Store in Ginza (Tokyo), on Sunday 24th, they had a quick look at it and sent it off for repair the next day.

On Tuesday 26th my MacBook was repaired and sent back to me, arriving on Wed 27th. The following things have been changed:

607-0199 NEW THERMAL HEATSINK ASSY, M42
    875-2828 FOAM, THERMAL SENSOR COINN
    J922-7754 TOP CASE W/KEYBOARD ASSY, V2-JPN
    922-7776 BEZEL, DISPLAY, VERSION 2

So far so good, no random shutdowns whatsoever. For me at least the logic board didn’t seem to be the cause of the problem.

Well you dont belive me, I didnt belive it either when a friend told him is son had injured himself with Macbooks razor sharp edges. But read the following links:-

    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=203455

Search the apple discussion form and try google. Feel the edges of your macbook and you will understand what I am saying.

This Macbook is a health hazard, seriously dangerous for kids, please pour your complains to Consumer Safety & Health department for RECALL of this product. Do not let your kids near your MACBOOK.

I visited Apple Service Center, they refuse to acknowledge this is a problem.

  • just until apple do something

As well as we use option+apple+P+R or put it out and in the battery, yesterday i do this and now i can start the macbook everyday and work most of the day in just one or two programs open.
its a good choise until apple do something seriously.

when u turn on your macbook push apple+S and you enter to an black system window
at the end when the cursor is write this:

    /sbin/fsck-y

    then enter

    then write the word REBOOT

    and enter again

this will stabilize and optimize all ur system.

by the way…i call the apple care here in Mexico and one person tell me that two day ago recieved news from apple US. Apple US say to Mexico to change the sensor cables on mac, maybe here will don’t change the logic board or the heatsink, or maybe the 3 things…lets see in some weeks well i leave my mac there.

So they had it a total for four days, and they overnighted it back. List of parts indicates the heatsink and a ’sponge heatpipe back’.

I’m posting this from it, now.

We’ll see how it holds up over the long haul.

Meanwhile, I have to say that from the time that I called, to the time I got it back, tech support has been pretty responsive. I have to credit that to the presence of boards like this that serve as a gathering point for disgruntled users who are tired of getting the ’standard yada runaround’.

So, I’d say, give Apple a call, let them address it and evaluate from there.

UPDATE: 09/28 - repair completed at Aspen Grove Apple Store, parts only took 4 days to arrive. Only been using for a few hours, but so far so good.

ORIGINAL: 09/25 - About 60 days after purchasing my CoreDuo2ghz/1.25GB, the RSS started. Spent a week troubleshooting on my own, then found this (and other) sites on MacBook RSS. Contacted Apple for repair, but in the following week could barely keep it running long enough to perform any backup. Finally in frustration, went to Apple Store (generally a last resort - I don’t care for the stores in any fashion). I raised the biggest stink I could be didn’t get a replacement as some others have reported. I was able to get a commitment from the Manager to expedite the delivery of the repair parts. They hope to get the parts in less than two weeks, instead of the 3-4 weeks or more they are normally quoting.

    Being hopeful … ;-)
