Hey guys, I’m a freshman in College and got my amazing (until recently) MacBook the day after graduating from high school. It’s my first Mac, but I’d been wanting one for a long time. I had complete faith in their reliability and whatnot. My RSS (or RSD, whichever you prefer) problems started just a few days ago…….only about a week or two after my 90 day phone help was up. The Apple website says if you’re having problems with random shutdown, to contact AppleCare. So I called and got the, ” we’re sorry, your 90 phone coverage is up” message. “But didnt Apple say to call AppleCare?” What the hell Apple? So now, ive got a decision to make. Do I:
(A) Take the computer to Apple and ask for (an unlikely) replacement. I am in college and the closest Apple store is two hours away in Atlanta and I have no car. I can’t really survive in college without a computer. Most of my work is posted online and not having a computer would be very inconvenient.
(B) Send it back for repair, which by the looks of things, often makes things worse? Like I said, most of my work is online and not having a computer would be hard. I’ve heard it takes weeks sometimes, I can’t stand for that.
I don’t know what to do. Any other suggestions? I’m sick of it. Any help, you could email to me at austin@austincabot.com. Thanks everybody. With everyone’s helped, lets get this problem solved.
He Austin,
Send it back for repair. I’ve had many many macs over the years, and occasionally i’ve had hardware issues. Sending it back has always resolved these very quickly, and the repairs have never made anything worse… apple have the best repair facilities of any manufacturer, and they are “officially” aware of this problem.
Turnaround for my ibook when the hard disk died was a mere 4 days too… I was also a student, but I just waited till there was a one week lull in studies to send it off.
Good luck. Nick.
This problem is covered by your warranty. Call AppleCare back and if they give you the “out of 90 days” rubbish, get the operator’s name and report them. I called (my 90 days ran out ages ago) and they were very helpful because my 1 year warranty is still in full effect.
yes, mine is past 90 days and in the shop, so it is covered (if they are screening you with caller id, try a friends phone & tell them it is a hardware problem). however, apple is totally slammed with this problem, mine has been in for almost 2 weeks waiting on a new heat sink that is on order. i have heard of others currently in for longer. i waited on hold 2 hours friday only to find out they didn’t know when parts would be coming in. i had waited a month to send mine in, hoping they might have a better handle on the problem by then. i was able to start it up by holding down the power until the loud beep came, then it generally worked once it warmed up, as long as i didn’t let it go to sleep, the problem did get progressively worse. so, i don’t know whether it is better now to wait or get your computer in line, either way, don’t hold your breath!
