MACBOOK’S RAZOR SHARP EDGES CAN CUT YOUR WRIST - STOP IMMEDIATELY
Filed in: Random Shutdown Add comments
Well you dont belive me, I didnt belive it either when a friend told him is son had injured himself with Macbooks razor sharp edges. But read the following links:-
http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=203455
Search the apple discussion form and try google. Feel the edges of your macbook and you will understand what I am saying.
This Macbook is a health hazard, seriously dangerous for kids, please pour your complains to Consumer Safety & Health department for RECALL of this product. Do not let your kids near your MACBOOK.
I visited Apple Service Center, they refuse to acknowledge this is a problem.

Come on. Let’s focus on legitimate issues with this product, not generalized hysteria.
September 29th, 2006 at 9:37 pm
I immediately felt the sharp edge (right side). So I treated the edge with a very fine sandpaper (400) now it is very smooth.

is this a joke? i suppose the macbook could also be used as a weapon if people started hurling them at their enemies…. haha.
September 30th, 2006 at 4:19 pm
i think your just to delicate
September 30th, 2006 at 5:58 pm
I am also delicate, I work on lathe whole day on my workshop. But a few days ago my finger tip was badly cut while cleaning the Macbook.
Filing, sanding, putting a knife etc. on the Macbook is not a solution. Only if Apple thinks this is the way, they should issue advice to take the Macbook to the Service Center and do what ever they want.
This is a design flaw. I have reported this to the Consumer groups, I have faith in them and the truth will soon come out. I will also request all those who think Macbook edges are sharp to lodge a complain.
I also did a google search and it seems that a whole lot pf people are turning delicate. If that is so shouldnt apple think of the delicate people while designing their Machines. Or atleast issue necessary warning for the consumers.

you have to deal with discoloration, strange noise, rss and apple´s hotline … you´ve got to be tough if you want to use a macbook.

Might make the discoloration / stains more interesting

I thought I was the only one who thought the edge was too sharp. I have not actually cut myself, but if I use for more than an hour straight, the skin just below my right wrist that makes contact with the edge is red and sore. Left hand not bothered. I am gradually learning to elevate my right wrist but it is awkward. To me, this is a design flaw, one made, I will bet, because looks were decided to be more important than function.

I think that this has to be one of the dumbest things I have ever heard. If you get a scratch deal with it. I have had my macbook for about 4 months and this has never happened to me.
October 26th, 2006 at 12:51 pm
I recently bought a MacBook and found this sharp edge problem is really serious. By touching the edge gently, you can feel the sharpness and no doubt you will get hurt if you slip your hands with the edge very fast.
I do believe this is a design fault and I hope Apple will come out some solution for it.
October 26th, 2006 at 1:23 pm
Although I’ve had numerous problems, I’ve never cut myself with the damn thing. Soon they’ll stop us from bringing them on planes because you might be able to use it as a weapon of terror. lollerzville.
November 4th, 2006 at 6:41 am
no cuts. but it sure is uncomfortable. It gets me on the pad of my right hand where I rest it. I am starting to believe I should have waited until 2d generation, which is what everyone recommends.
November 4th, 2006 at 11:22 pm
Let’s all remember that our comments are very subjective and each macbook we own can have it’s own properties. That said, my wrist does get irritated after prolonged use, while I don’t think it could cut me under normal use, running my skin across it very quickly brings images of a papercut in between my fingers ( ala Jackass the movie)…. not pleasant. This might be a solution. http://www.macworld.com/weblogs/macgems/2006/07/softpads/index.php
I doubt it’s a big enought problem for Apple to fess up but a change in the 2nd gen would be nice.

I found that the sandpaper trick (which was done with utmost care), completely eliminated the sharp edge on my brand new (one week old) MacBook, and I’m SO much happier that I risked doing it, because I’m 100% more comfortable now on the laptop because of it.
If you do it carefully, you cant even see the difference the sandpaper made with your eyes, or even your fingertips - you really have to put your hands on the keyboard to feel the difference with your wrists.

How much did you sand paper off? How long did you spend (5 mins/ 10 mins)? Did you get the two layers to mesh together, or is it just a brief sanding? Any tips would be appreciated… seeing as once you sandpaper it you can’t go back! Thanks!

My solution was, well, a solution– Acetone (most nail polish removers are 100% acetone). Use a q-tip dipped in acetone and gently run it along the sharp edge, being careful not to get any between the cover and panels as that may cause them to fuse together. After about 20 seconds use a dry q-tip along the same edge. If you get any acetone on the shiny part of the case it will go from “gloss” to “matte”. Anyway, the acetone melts the plastic and the sharpness is reduced. This process may need to be repeated a few times. Acetone is quite volatile and will evaporate from the q-tip quickly. Acetone is a solvent that can be used for “melting” plexiglas pieces together, so it does have the properties to soften, melt and join plastics.

i cut my self everyday
November 7th, 2007 at 8:22 pm
TRUE! It only takes about a month to notice it if you are a heavy user. I’ve got mine propped up on a printer and attached a keyboard to it. Total crap. I’m never buying a apple again. Pricks and they suck about returns and backing their product. DO NOT BUY A MACBOOK, get the cheaper ibook i doubt you’ll notice a difference.
December 5th, 2007 at 6:15 pm
I’m a ultra heavy user 8-12 and I recently cut my finger on my MAC book on the edge between the space bar and touch pad. That edge it razor sharp and can easily cut soft skin like your wrist or fingers. So - after a quick “google” of the topic; I can see I’m not alone and it’s true for you non-believers. Walk into your local MAC retail store and run your finger along the edge. If you dare do so… The cut is similar to a paper cut, I’ll live but am very mindful of the edge when typing and switching between my mouse and touch pad.
However, I do find it annoying that the edge is so sharp, has there been any official response from Steve-O at Apple regarding this?
I’ve been a Thinkpad user for my entire career and recently switched to a MAC. And it –rocks! I plan on purchasing another to replace the PC’s at home.

well i’m running my wrists across the edge of my macbook as i’m typing this, and i feel absolutely no pain. no matter how hard i press down, it still doesn’t hurt…
sorry folks.

Cutting your self is good, why would you wana get rid of that??
February 7th, 2008 at 2:44 am
I need to post a photo. I have a thin line cut that goes away on the weekend and is back by Wednesday
February 9th, 2008 at 11:11 am
Yeah, my new laptop give me “suicide wrists”, I took the laptop back to Apple and they told me to use it at a desk and to use it on my lap less, since this is when the “suicide looking wrists” occur. What a shmuck, I said that it defeated the purpose of being a LAPTOP. No cut wrists though, just very deep and red/purple looking indented lines on the area just below of wrists.
February 14th, 2008 at 7:15 am
I can’t use mine for more than about five minutes without my wrists protesting. It’s actually quite painful. I’m very disappointed in Apple here, I’ve been a Mac user from Day 1. I’d have expected better QA from them than this. It’s not the first time they’ve goofed on ergonomics (remember the first iMac mouse?) but this is the first time I’ve hurt myself using a Mac. I shouldn’t have to take sandpaper out to fix the problem either. Heads have got to roll for this.

Folding Chair Slip Covers - A Hot New Trend…
A folding chair slip cover is the perfect solution in bringing to life those old, dull looking brown folding chairs you have sitting around the house. These types of slip covers are becoming hugely popular for several reasons….

the edges are really annoying, did anybody found a solution for it?? besides sand paper
March 3rd, 2008 at 7:46 am
painful, very painful, i hope someone sues apple.

I am glad to know that I am not the only one with this issue. My husband thinks that I am crazy. I went back to the apple store and mentioned this and they acted like they had never heard about this. My wrist are killing me. I love my mac but am not sure it is worth the pain.
I did notice that they fixed this problem on the mac book pros. I dont feel I should have to pay $800 more to not have my wrist in severe pain.
April 16th, 2008 at 1:55 am
Certainly a design flaw. The wrist suffers using the new macbook. Until this edge is fixed (sandpaper or acetone) the macbook is just a toy, not the workhorse that my old powerbook was.
Having spent 30+ years with Apple, this is the first time I’ve had to choose between sandpaper and acetone to improve performance.

You could use tape. I used the brown packing tape that you use for mailing boxes. I put it on really randomly so that it would look like a 60s fluxus objet d’art. To people that study art it looks like something Joseph Beuys would use. To the uninitiated it just looks like my computer is a piece of ugly crap that is falling apart and thus, not worth stealing. No longer hurts to use. I don’t care how it looks so this solved my problem.
June 4th, 2008 at 10:41 pm
I have a sharp edge on my 2008 macbook. not really nearly as big of a deal as it’s made out to be…..I actually ran my wrist across it really fast just to see if it would get cut. A line on my skin, but nothing serious by any stretch of the (sane) imagination.
Apple should fix it, but really it’s not nearly as big of a deal as some of you people are making it out to be. I’ve been using my macbook for 3 hours straight today and yes, my wrists are irritated, but nowhere near “cut”.
Though of course it helps that when I’m at home I keep an external keyboard and mouse attached.

If you are scared to do the 400 sandpaper suggestion on her get a 600 sandpaper and go very slowly and carefully on a 45 degree angle on the edge. You will not notice a visible difference in the way the computer looks but you will feel it. It is like a whole new computer for me and is no longer painful in any way. I should have done this months ago. Thanks to the person who suggested it on here.
