MacBook appears to be fine again :)

I registered my MacBook last week on your pool of MacBooks suffering from RSS. I have had my MacBook since July and had no problems with it until I patched the new SMC update around 3 weeks ago. The following day, I had nothing but RSS issues and this continued until I brought it back to the shop on the Saturday. The shop called Apple support for me and replaced the RAM and said if it contined to bring it back in.
My MacBook ran ok for about 2 days and I was back to RSS. I stuck with it for a few more days and then last week I checked for any new Mac updates and their were was a download of about 150MB of new updates, all software related to iTunes, iMovie, etc and nothing for the SMC. However when I took a look at the system logs, under software update (found in system preferences) I see that Apple had managed to sneak in an SMC update by Intel. Since then I have not had a single RSS and everything appears to be back to normal. What worries me about this fix is, 1: they did not mention in the downloads anything about an SMC update and where an SMC update is required a lengthy WARNING!!! is given about please ensure your Mac is plugged in to the mains during an SMC update i.e. if your computer shuts down during an SMC update of EEPROM memory, you will probably have rendered your MacBook useless. So from what I have gathered of Apple, they had realised what was wrong with their last SMC update and then tried to put out a fix without telling their customers. Why not tell us about an SMC update, when they have done so in the past and they know the risks involved. But at least my MacBook is working again and I can rest for awhile.

I am sad to say that I dowloaded the lattest mac upted, which includes the SMC update by Intel. My mac work fine for two days and then the RSS started again…But I think you are right, we should be constantly updating our mac since it is expected that Mac could come with a repair strategy trought the software update.

My Macbook has not had any more shutdowns after the 10.4.8 software update. At least not so far. It was one day ago. Hope it will continue working.

I’m just in the door and only seeing the 10.4.8 update and I see that it comes with a list of areas that it updates i.e. “general operating system fixes”. Looking at my updates though from the other night 2006-09-29, these somehow appeared to fix my RSS shutdown but for the life of me I would probably need to dig into each fix to see what they did to my underlying OS. This is what I have installed todate:

As you can see the SMC update was on 2006-09-16 and for 13 days, I suffered with RSS and after the 29 just before I hit the bed. The following day everything appeared to be ok again. So my question is, are Apple hiding anything in there regular updates that are fixing problems unrelated to the patches they are asking to install on are MacBooks. This I have some what of an issue with, as I like to keep track of everything that comes and goes on my machine. Well I will try and look into it further and see what, if any system changes happened on the 29th.

I guess I will go and see what 10.4.8 does now :) RSS vs 1.01

  7. geoff Says:

Well trust me to go and do a COBOL on myself and shoot myself in the foot. Just after my last post, I began downloading my 10.4.8 update and at the same time transfering about 2GB of data of my MacBook to my external USB drive and Whollla I get hit with RSS. Thankfully after a few attempts to restart I got back up and running and my MacBook was kind enough to remember where it had left off with the download :) Apple I do think are by far the best at logging and updating their machines, so I have to hand that to them. So now I am up on 10.4.8
What worried me with the update after the restart, is it seemed to do an RSS while it was rebooting and restart again. Did anyone else see this? I just hope I am out of troubled water by this stage :P here’s to shooting myself in the other foot now…

  8. Pissed off Says:

I just installed the update, hoping that Apple somehow cured RSS and was too scared to announce it to the public, so they snuck it into an update (i’m not betting on it, just hoping). Anyway, yeah, my machine seemed to do a mini-RSS while it was rebooting during the update as well. Who knows…

  9. Pissed off Says:

does anyone have any input as to whether or not this is actually feasible. could this update really have fixed RSS?

  10. arkmax Says:

No. 10.4.8 did not fix the RSS problem. I have RSS at least once a day right after starting up my Macbook.

SMC firmware update did not fix the problem either.

I think it is a hardware issue not software.

My MacBook has been suffering from RSD for over two months now. My shutdowns always seemed to occur within a half hour of either 1.) waking from sleep or 2.) powering on and starting up. I was able to trick it into not RSD-ing by booting to the lovely sound of the Screech Of Death (holding down the power button until I could hear the dreadful high-pitched beep) and then running iTunes at all times so it couldn’t fall into sleep mode. Not an ideal work-around, but I figured it would hold me until the backlog of CrashBooks in the repair centers cleared up a bit.

However, my luck gave out when I downloaded all the 10.4.8 update. Upon rebooting, my moody CrashBook (which was all nice and cosy warm – but *not* hot and bothered) booted up to the infamous screen of multicolored vertical lines. (This made NO SENSE – in the past, it would only RSS when cold!) Finally, I did the PMU reset thingie four times — but still had no luck getting rid of those pesky little stripes. Oddly enough, when I did a PRAM reset, I was able to boot up. Then I did the change the monitor settings thing and then changed them back to my original setting.

So far so good, but I still have my iTunes on at all times and I’m running on one processor. I guess it’s just hard to believe a software update fixed something when Apple is still replacing heatsinks and adding sponges to the heatsinks. But who knows? Apple sure isn’t telling!!

My Macbook has started shutting down again. The 10.4.8 update unfortunately didn’t work :-(
