Firmware
I have posted before and have brought my macbook in and had it fixed already from the Random Shutdown issue. Overall, I have defended Apple on this issue – and I am still not too PO’ed, but I am getting there. Bad news this morning – my wife called me and told me it is back! I suspected this might happen b/c she downloaded the firmware upgrade last night and I told her that was a bad idea, she closed up the book and then this morning when she opened it back up – it shut down. We have had no problems since we got out machine back 2-3 weeks ago. I am going to bring it in to the Apple Store tonight by my apartment. I will tell them about it and either ask for a replacement, or see if they can simply take the firmware update off. I know this can’t just be a coincidence that the recurrence occurred immediately after a long sleep with the new firmware. Anyone know how to remove the update? Is it possible? Anyone else had this same thing happen?

I haven’t had any problems since I’ve gotten my macbook back from repairs 3 weeks ago, and here’s what I did:
When I got the macbook back, I immediately downloaded the SMC Firmware update so that my fan would run continuously (I thought this would be the best idea considering it would only keep my processor even cooler: 52 degrees celcius).
When the 10.4.8 update came out, I immediately downloaded that as well. It seems as though this update also made my fan run even more, dropping my average temperature to 47 degrees celcius.
If a machine is vulnerable, there definitely seems to be a link to updating the OS and RSS. I remember this happening to many users updating from 10.4.6 to 10.4.7. In fact, that is exactly what happened to me. Although, the issue IS hardware related, perhaps an OS update is extremely hardware intensive- causing the RSS. I have not had any issues after updating to 10.4.8, so my advice is to download all of the updates as soon as you get your macbook back from repair. That’s what I’ve done and I’ve been problem free for 3 weeks now.

Random shutdowns should not happen whether you installed the firmware update or not. Send your laptop back to Apple and they will replace the heatsink and some wire. The problem will only get worse if you don’t get the hardware fixed.
