DO NOT update to 10.4.8 if you use illustrator because it will crash unexpectedly. Apple and Adobe are aware of this problem.

One problem after another..........when will it end?

Ive taken my machine ina few times to apple to complain about my fan making scary noises. and each time they seem to just dismiss it. i cant afford for them to have it for another few weeks just to dismiss it again. I'm planning on replaceing the fan by my lonesome. just one problem. i dont know they type of fan i need to buy to replace it with. can anyone give me any specs for the type which i'd need to order.
I'm pleased for you. HOWEVER you shouldn't have to install extra software to control the fan in order for the machine to work properly. It's simply not good enough.

Shin-

Please note the instructions I have given do not solve the problem- they merely help prevent it from returning after a repair from Apple (as mentioned in the first sentence of my post). "...running perfectly after sending my week 21 black macbook in for repair." Kevin said that the FanControl 1.1 software has worked for him as a temporary fix for his machine.

I would not recommend opening your machine (link at the bottom of my original post) if you have AppleCare as that could void your warranty if Apple found out about it. However, the only true solution (if you decide to fix your own machine) is to disassemble it and apply kapton tape to the exposed wire from the heatsink. Another precaution to take is to check the amount of thermal paste on the heatsink itself. Please follow the directions carefully.

i did just as you mentioned.
but macbook still shutdowns. though its not as frequest as before.

previously i could power it on instantly with the BEEP procedure. Now this also fails. And after about 15 minutues or so the BEEP thing works.

i have downloaded all the updates.

one more thing i am geting lot of kernal panics. the screen just freezes and everything stops working. I have to force boot the machine.

I have a Macbook suffering from RSS and I have installed the fan control and upped the fan speed by a large amount. It's been running at about 28-35C since then, it's a little louder but I have been shutdown free for over 20 hours now and it has slept and woken-up succesfully in that time period. It looks like the fan control is a good temporary fix for RSS.
