While in the Apple store in downtown Chicago today…
I was in Chicago today and briefly visited the Apple store on Michigan Avenue. Just like all the Apple stores, it was so crowded, everyone trying out all the cool products Apple has in the store. I sat there and just looked around a while, and then started scoping out the Macbooks. I played with a couple of them and no crashes.
I then just did a test to see how long it would take for an associate to approach me about the Macbooks. In my mind, I was thinking about how widespread this issue of RSS really is in the ‘wild’ so to speak.
Finally, after about 10 minutes, a guy was free and came up to me and asked if I had any questions…oh such a loaded question I thought to myself. I then proceeded to tell him that I thought the new design was great for the Macbooks but I “had read online that sometimes they just ‘randomly shutdown’” - to which he quickly responded, “Yeah, it’s a known issue. There are actually a bunch of customers forming a class action lawsuit about it, which is a little extreme if you ask me”. He then proceeded to say, “the problem is with the heatsink, it was a cheap part that was put into the Macbook and all the kinks weren’t ironed out with it”…”but if you have any problems with your Macbook, just bring it right upstairs and the guys will fix it for you, no problem”
I didn’t tell him who I was or that I started this web site dedicated to the issue but I hadn’t been in an Apple store in a few weeks so I wanted to see what the level of “awareness” was with the whole debacle.
Just wanted to pass this one on for you all to discuss!
Cheers!

Today I bit the bullet and did the disassembly from iFix with the Flikr guy’s comments to guide me and it’s all true! The wires on the sensors next to the fan were insecure and melted. After some careful cleaning and re-insulation, the macbook works again, so far without crashes. Apple, this is really disgraceful. I’ve spent 15 years supporting your products and never thought that I would complain one day about lousy design: running thin sensor cables without adequate protection so close to a heat sink is just stupid.
I now believe that the problem of kernel panic (when the machine does not shut down properly and runs hot until you notice the problem) is the precursor of RSS. So that’s 2 design faults in one product, something of a record. The sooner Apple come clean on these failures the better.

Struggling with a 17 inch PowerBook G4 not yet 2 years old which began to do multiple kernel panics after loading 10.4.4. It has been back to local authorized Apple repairer(it was out of warranty period - though after much pushing they did agree to pay for parts while I paid for labour) and had (allegedly) replacement of the mother board and replacement of the 1GB RAM. Ten minutes after return it was kernel panicking again. Have wiped the HD, reinstated 10.3, worked up to 10.4.8, reset the PMU etc. etc Still no joy. Runs very hot - too hot for a lap! (yes I know Apple doesn’t call them laptops!).
Then - discovered that this machine is totaslly stable run on battery alone. Only does the kernel panics or freezes if the charger is plugged in. Beginning to wonder if this Apple machine may have a similar problem to the MacBook issue you are concerned with. Having been a loyal Mac fan since OS6, I am beginning to wonder if i might “think different” and go Windows if the Apple hardware is so expensive (my book was 2200 UK pounds) and so unreliable.
