Going by the repair experience of macbook owners it appears Macbook Heat Sink & sometimes Logic Board is changed during repairs. Even the repaired Macbook will require atleast a months use to certify if the problem has been fixed.
I consider this to be a MAJOR repair. And I am not willing to accept repaired Macbook. Owners have reported Shutdowns after just a months use, APPLE should replace the MACBOOK fully no questions asked. or go for a RECALL.
We didnt pay for refurbised Macbooks did we.
What I wonder is what happens when the 1 year warranty has expired, taking into account that you do not have Apple Care or an equivalent insurance? Exchanging the logic board, probably the most expensive piece. Had to have my iBook’s logic board replaced only 2 months after warranty had expired; my eyes starting to pop out when I heard about the $1000 bill I had to expect from this. Fortunately I got away with a blue eye: At the time of repair I was still a student and would have never been able to take care of the costs. Apple gave in and took over. This random shutdown problem really seems to be a major design problem. Apple wake up and start a repair program for all current and future hardware damages of this kind!
The only reason for Apple not to do a full recall on this is they’re betting several people — myself included, probably don’t push the MacBook to full load enough to make it fail within the first year. If the problem doesn’t surface until two years into the product’s life — Apple doesn’t have to pay to fix it’s engineering mistake.
My MacBook was my first Apple purchase. If I have to send mine in, it’ll be my last. They had their shot.
I’ve had my macbook for a week and it just did its first random shutdown. I quickly installed the new SMC firmware upgrade (which came out yesterday ironically). We’ll see if it works.
Actually, I purchased a refurb.
read your warranty… apple will repair or replace your system with parts that could be new or refurbished, if you don’t like it… then don’t get a mac.
Frogstik,
i have read the warranty… but why dont you understand that APPLE has supplied me with a defective Macbook. All I am asking is a replacement or money back. I did not pay to buy any refurbished or defective Macbook from them.
I would have accepted repairs, but within one month of my purchase no way.
for record i have installed the new firmware and Macbook still shutdowns.
btw are you from apple…
I think much of the problem is we are getting A LOT of people that don’t understand electronics, nor the repair process.
NO computer company will automatically give you a “new machine” or entirely “new part” when just a small component needs to be corrected. Electroncis are not MECHANICS… it’s all solid state, (except HDs, CD drives of course) so new computer users need to learn, if Apple or (anyone) fixes a computer, they are going to REPAIR it, not give you a totally new part. It simply doesn’t make sense otherwise, this is how this industry functions and it is best for everyone since it keeps prices down and quality up.
The MacBook is an entirely NEW design, logicboard, case, OS, etc. So it took a little while to make them perfect. Now with the firmware update the shutdown problem is resolved, so all that is left is people mistreating them (small cracks) and people that don’t wash their hands (minor discoloration)
Other than that the MacBook is a nice little machine, with lots of bang for the buck!
