Well, it’s been a few days, actually just over a week since the Apple Firmware ‘fix’ for RSS was released. What is the general consensus on the Firmware patch? I would like for everyone to post their experience with the ‘fix’ from Apple by commenting on this post. Hope everyone has a great weekend!
Cheers!

My Macbook has gone from absolute disaster to something I can work with at last.
Ever since the ‘fix’. I never bothered to enter the lottery of a replaced heatsink etc but my machine is now perfect. For now.
The whole episode has soured my view of Apple. Especially the catty genius types we’ve all encountered. And you’ve got to laugh at the Apple advert mocking the shutdowns of PCs… How I’ve frothed at the mouth when that advert comes on. Thrown rotten fruit at the screen.
Anyway, thanks Matthew for putting up this site and getting Apple of its butt to fix our machines. Much appreciated.
We might need this site in a few weeks when our Macbooks start growing tentacles and taking over our houses.

Sorry, I should have said “getting Apple OFF its butt…” !
I don’t want a Genius to have to correct me.

yes i ran the firmware repair update yesterday and my macbook has not shutdown since.
a day is not a long time i know but it feels like forever and such a weight off the shoulders
how long for, though, will be interesting.

For months I was living with RSS but the problem was getting progressively worse. I was ready to bring it in a subject myself to an accusatory session with the geniuses, but I have not had an issue since the update. I am keeping my fingers crossed that it does not return.

Perfect since update

Installing the patch did NOT work for me.
Started RSS yesterday, less than a month after I purchased the Macbook. Applecare walked me through the procedure to fix the problem (installing the SMC patch, reseting the Power Management , etc.), and I am still having the same problem. I can’t even get my data off of the computer, because it is shuts down so quickly after I reboot (I can get only a few files off at a time). I am taking it back to the reseller on Monday, and mulling over my options: repair, replace or return for refund.

I have had the RRS almost since I bought my macbook in june. I have been waiting for the new spare-parts to come to Denmark. At last they came, and fourteen days ago I brought it in for a repair. I got it back after a week with a new motherboard an a new heat-sink, and the same day I downloaded the fix. My macbook has worked fine since, but I can not say what did it. Although my macbook seems to be allright now, still I am not content with apple! I think this issue has taken far to long!!! If I knew in june what I know now, I would never have bought a macbook, and I certainly will advice my friends to by a PC and not a macbook..

I wasn’t having bad RSS problems. Usually when I moved my macbook in a way that seemed normal for me but I guess it made something trigger in there and make it shut down. It did shut down a couple of times under normal usage as well. Anyways, I applied the update and after that I noticed it was much better and had no shutdowns. Then I shaked it a bit violently to test and it did shut down. I thought, oh well, that’s kinda odd but I shouldn’t be doing that anyways. Today though, I was running a pretty CPU intensive program, my fans were on and all and it was fine. I moved it to plug in the scanner so I can scan a page and right when I plug in the cable…SNAP….it turns off!
I never had the heatsink replaced or anything like that but it is a bit disconcerting for me that this happened.
Anybody else still have some issues?

One things ive noticed after smc firmware update 1.1, is that my macbook (which no longer dies if im runing CPU intensive processes!) is now running alot hotter (60 C when idling!!) , and the fans are on at about 3000 rpm ALL the time! This is really annoying as not only is the macbook noisier, its also hotter than it was before the smc firmware update 1.0!
Not happy

i downloaded the update and everything was working fine until today. I had RSS again…. 1st time, but i am slightly worried

FIXED for me too. Works smooth since the last firmware update.

Yep, I got the firmware update a little over a week ago, and so far so good.

The update worked for me too. In fact, I had bring it in to the service center a few day before the update was released. The recommendation from the service center was to replace the heat sink and I took back my laptop while waiting for the new heat sink to arrive. I had installed the update before I replace my heat sink. The update works but I still sent my laptop in to replace the heatsink since it is still under warranty and cost me nothing to do so.
I did however notice that my MB’s fan seems to rev faster more often after the heatsink replacement. Still love my macbook alot despite the unpleasant hiccup. I will still choose MB over any PC anytime…..

Hello,
It seems that neither the update, nor the change of the heatsink work for me. I live in Bulgaria, and the apple center here says they will keep changing parts, but will not give me a new MB. I’ve had it with apple, and don’t know what to do. I bought a 2000 Euro problem!
November 8th, 2006 at 1:40 pm
I got my new MacBook on Thursday, and had the first shutdown on Friday. It continued with the random shutdowns even after the firmware update, and on Monday I sent it back to get the heatsink replaced.

I had my heat sink replaced in September, and for a few days it seemed to be fine. Then the RSS kicked back in about a week later. The shut offs were farther apart, but still a nuisance. I upgraded the firmware on Monday, thinking Apple might have finally found the problem.
It hadn’t.
Tuesday afternoon, my MacBook decided to shut down twice within a few minutes. It’s now Wednesday, and it has already shut down once this morning.
Looks like AppleCare will be hearing from me yet again…

Well, I don´t have RSS anymore, but my Macbook is really hot, the fan runs all the time (very slowly that´s true) and my battery doesn´t last at all. I don´t know if that´s a consecuence of the fan running all the time or something else.
I love my Macbook but I think I am going to get rid of it, go back to my rock solid 12″ iBook with a five hours battery, and wait until Mac gets this issue solved.

I couldnt find a forum on this site so I thought I’d post this here. I’m a mac newb thinking of ordering a macbook online. If I buy a macbook direct from apple, will I get the most recent (production week) version of the macbook?
Also: Will the firmware upgrade come included in macbooks made after the week it came out?

Bankbot,
You are lucky! When you now order a MacBook, you get a Core 2 Duo and 1 GB RAM for the same price! So make sure you get the latest model as advertised on the Apple website. This will be a second generation MacBook, and probably many of the first generation issues (such as RSS) will be solved.
Have fun with your new MacBook!

Bought my MacBook 2.0 about one month ago and run the firmware update sometime last week. Untill today never experienced any shutdowns, untill that is because two hours ago it died on me and it won’t come back to life again. Damn, this sucks! Pardon my French…

Applied SMC Firmware update the day it was released. Not a single RSS since then. Actually, I purposefully limited my rebooting after a couple of days and currently I have uptime of 12 days 3 hours and counting according to my iStat Pro widget. That is including closing the Macbook and putting to sleep many times a day now. Previously, once I had good “boot” I wouldn’t put it to sleep on purpose b/c that seemed to trigger a RSS very soon after waking, usually when the machine was very cold. I never really had a RSS when the machine was hot.
Also on a side note, the Airport sleep issue seems to be fixed now. It reconnects to the WiFi hotspot it was connected to prior to sleeping within 1-2 seconds. No more having to reboot or renew the IP lease just to reconnect. That may have been fixed by a Mac OS X update as there were 2-3 released during my RSS plague and had to reboot so much that wasn’t my main problem.
I love my Macbook 2.0 GHz, 2.0 GB RAM and it runs flawlessly now. Great job to Apple for getting this fixed.

You mean Great job to Apple for sticking a temporary cork in the problem.
