I think they fixed it.

My automatic update did some sort of EFI Firmware update that supposedly fixed the known start-up/wake-up problem. I assume that means RSS. We’ll see.

nope, i ran the firmware and the next day it shut down twice. . . i want the problem resolved but it doesn’t seem like apple has a firm answer yet so i don’t know if it’s worth taking it in for servicing.

I updated the firmware and it’s been working great!

I doubt it will fix it. When I sent mine in, they had to replace something called a “heatpipe”.
From what I’ve been able to garner, there is a piece of insulation under the fingerpad that melts, if it gets too hot. This results in more frequent shutdowns. Replacement of the “heatpipe” apparently fixes this and keeps the insulation from melting.

The second SMC firmware update was the one intended to fix RSS. The EFI update fixes various issues with waking from sleep, and I *think* (but cannot be 100% sure) that the boot up issue is the infamous ‘multi-coloured vertical lines’ issue that would normally need a PRAM reset.
If you install all the three firmware updates (2x SMC, 1x EFI) and are still suffering RSS, then the problem most likely isn’t the ‘usual’ one and may be the battery or whatever. Send it in and let them look - they’ll see that the firmware didn’t fix it and be able to properly test the other components.
