Core 2 Duo Macbook Pro Shutsdown after running CPU at 100% for 20 min.
I thought they had this issue fixed in the new models. I guess not, my Macbook pro (15″ 2.33Ghz) shutsdown if it gets too hot (even watching a video podcast via iTunes is enough to do it). I’m going to take it in in a few days to see if they know what’s up. I would think that the wire insulation melting thing would have been fixed, so I don’t know what it is.
EDIT: My shutdowns are NOT heat related!! They are completely random with nothing that consistently triggers them. Once, my macbook pro had trouble turning back on for about 15 minutes. I tried resetting the SMC and no effect. Only leaving it (it kept retrying to turn on automatically) for 15min let it turn on at one its attempts. It’s now in for repair.

Maybe your cooler(s) is not working properly and causes some overheating problems which result in these shutdowns?
November 24th, 2006 at 1:21 am
Possibly, I’m trying to see if other Macbook Pro C2D owners have experienced this at all.
I’m also getting the “Left Fan Constantly on High” problem when I wake from sleep or turn on from being off. It seems that it goes back to normal speed after about 5 minutes of being on. Weird! And stupid.
November 24th, 2006 at 10:28 am
I thought the MacBook Pro’s never had the random shutdown problem? Only the MacBooks.
November 24th, 2006 at 10:40 am
Well then I guess I have the first RSS Macbook Pro in the world? What’s also weird is that I get 60 less points on the XBench benchmark then other identical macbook pros (running nothing but essential services/apps). This, combined with my fan problem, means I’m definitely going to give this thing to Applecare in a few days.

If you run any laptop at 100% for 20 minutes it will get very, very hot. It will then shut down to protect itself. All laptops have thermal cut offs to prevent them being damaged by over heating and they do this by design. Don’t assume you have a problem just because you choose to mistreat your laptop for 20 minutes!
November 29th, 2006 at 8:31 pm
Craig, you have very low expectations of laptops. I ran my Dell Inspiron at 100% for HOURS at a time (compiling). I believe, if you try running any normal macbook pro (or any laptop for that matter), at 100% for 20 minutes or hours at a time, it will NOT shutdown unless the ambient temp is very hot. The ambient temp in my room was around 21C, which is very cold. Also, I couldn’t get my MBP to shutdown while running the stress test since. That’s right, I ran it for hours on end and it never shutdown. See below for more details on the shutdowns. Additionally, the fan behavior is way, way outside of normal.
My story gets much more complex. The fan problem was temporarily fixed when a Genius installed a third party fan app.
I’ve discovered that the shutdowns are not heat related. My macbook pro simply shuts down at random, I can’t consistently reproduce it. Once it shutdown at 41C. The next morning, it would not turn on. It would startup for 1 second (fans on high, again… even though the cores were at 25C or less), then shut down immediately. It would then try again 2 seconds later… 1 second of power, then shut off. It repeated this for 10 minutes. I then left it for 15 minutes, came back and it was booted up! Suffice to say, I was convinced the problem was worse than I thought. It’s now in Apples engineering dept for repair.
Not sure what they’re going to do since I can’t reproduce the shutdowns, they aren’t triggered by anything obvious. They’re going to run it as normal for two days and run diagnostics on the hardware to see if they can find anything.
So Craig, please show me where it says “don’t run your laptop at 100% for more than 20 minutes!” My temps were stable at 80C, far below the maximum operating temperature of 100C, and the emergency cutoff at 90C.

I had a MacBook Pro C2D that experienced random crashes - and usually the fan would come on full speed just prior to the crashes. We reproduced the problem by hooking the laptop up to an external display. The geniuses said I had a faulty logic board and issued a replacement laptop. The new machine has not done this yet… fingers crossed!

My 15″ MBP Core 2 Duo is shutting down and it’s definitely hardware and not heat related. I’ve only had the laptop three weeks. I use it offsite for location editing and sound production. At my office it’s used as a service for clusting in both FCP and Logic Pro. The CPU has been pushed since I got it without issue.
Sunday night, my wife and I were using it to watch a DVD. Fine.
Something had been up before that though. I started noticing that files requiring math processing and CRC checks were failing with constant errors - usually a sign of serious hardware failure in PCs.
Ten minutes after, when I was just checking my email, the screen went black and I was told to restart.
The computer restarted over twenty times and by the end I couldn’t get it on for more than a few seconds.
The computer is less than three weeks old. I need it for work. I can’t work off site. I know, complain complain, but this is terrible. I held off with the first gen macbooks and macbook pros so that they could iron out the bugs.
Obviously they have not.

Curiously, my MacBook Pro (15″/1GB/80GB/128VRAM/2GHz) is shuting down too randomly within 20 min. The only way to get it back is hard boot (power button for 5 sec, flashing light and long beep). The logic board was replaced at Apple (took > 4 weeks) and problem still occured within days of fix. Now it does it everytime. Great!

Hello everyone, just an update on my situation. I had to bring my macbook pro in to the store 3 times before I convinced them to ship it off. I got a call from an Apple representative saying that they wanted to keep my macbook pro for dissection to see what the problem was and I got a new machine. They say they pick machines at random when they get some weird new problem to try and keep and inspect. My new macbook is fine and doesn’t randomly shutdown (so far), but the battery does seem like it doesn’t quite fit, I hope it isn’t starting to bulge.
January 9th, 2007 at 2:20 am
My MacBook Pro 15″ shuts down randomly too. It is too weird as I didn’t realize it until tonight when it happened twice in the last 2.5 hours. Is there any official Apple word on it?
January 11th, 2007 at 3:24 am
I also have a macbook pro 15″ that shuts down randomly. It had a noisy/faulty fan and when it came back from apple for that problem (they also replaced a recalled battery) it developed this new random turn itself off problem.

This happened to me last night out of the blue. MBP 15″ Duo 2 - I was just opening emails in Entourage and the screen blackened with a message to “Restart.” Once I restarted, the machine began to repeat the bug after a couple of minutes! Then, at one point it began to start and restart on its own like crazy! I ran Apple’s included harware test with no problems showing. But, when I ran the more comprehensive hardware test it froze within a few minutes of checking memory (the first test), and I had to restart manually twice. It finally booted fine and I downloaded free virus checker and left it running last night. Haven’t checked the results yet… Will let u know!
February 6th, 2007 at 6:47 pm
Restarted the machine today - virus checker found a possible virus which I removed. It hasn’t shut down yet (after leaving it on overnight) but most of the items in the menu bar had disappeared! I tried to get them to show, but couldn’t. I then went to my account settings and removed Snapz Pro from my startup items and restarted and everything came back normal. I will keep you all advised whether the problem returns or not.
May 6th, 2007 at 7:57 pm
My mbp15 started to shut down randomly 2 weeks ago. It escalated quickly to shutting down sometimes during the initial seconds on a cold start (even with the laptop being off for a long time (not hot at all)). I took it in, had the logic board replaced last week and it seemed fine for 2 days. Today, it started with the same characteristics. It’s unusable again as it will shutdown with in a minuted of turning it on. What a pain in the butt. I just finished reinstalling everything on it.
One thing that I noticed is that sometimes the Fan will turn on really loud, but when I look at the fan control software it states that it is idle, but the sound sure does not indicate that. Not sure if that is related.
May 13th, 2007 at 5:25 pm
THIS IS BULLSHIT!!!!! I don’t even want to touch this piece of shit I keep getting a question mark which means the hard drive is failing. This really fucking sucks. I hate this computer. What a pisser to pay this much money for such a piece of shit.
May 23rd, 2007 at 2:53 pm
Check the apple site for OS X updates, do not use software update. There is a problem with the airport driver that will cause kernel panics. Run the 10.4.9 updater even if you have 10.4.9 as it will install Intel specific files that software update will not.

July 6th, 2007 at 1:55 pm
hello!
15″ mbp2,2, C2D, 2.16GHz, 667MHz, smc 1.12f5.
i have been experiencing similar problems recently as those mentioned on this thread.
my specifics: over the last week, the laptop has had it’s screen dimmed from the top down (like the window shade in tyrell’s office in blade-runner just prior to sean young’s interview) 6 times now. a message box in about 4 languages appears in the middle of the screen saying i have to press the power button for 5 seconds or push restart. no other information.
the laptop or fan are not running hot, as it has happened within the first 1/2 hour of booting up and all i have been doing is browsing simple sights. no other apps running other than email and safari/firefox.
my question is since i’m new to macintosh: is the description above of the “dimmed screen and push power button message” intrinsic to macs? or is it an indication that i may have a virus.
recently, i have transferred files using appletalk from an imac directly to my laptop; i have had to purchase and use a new 85W magsafe adapter; and apple prompted me to install software updates including this superdrive thing which i have since removed.
hope this helps others out there. and i hope others can help me. i’m close to the 1/2 hour mark so i better send this…
thanks,
jerm

I don’t know what everyone is talking about. I have the new Santa Rose Macbook Pro 2.4 GHZ with the Geforce, and I never get a shutdown, and I run my Macbook over 12 hour continuously a day like a desktop. I don’t have temperature problems. I downloaded the smcfancontrol. I don’t have all these problems that all of you guys have talked about in these threads. So, I don’t know what happened to you guys, but I think most of you don’t know how to treat your Macbook. I have mine in a cool room on a stable surface, and I play Mp3 music all day and night… and this thing stays prim and proper at 47 degrees Celsius. Oooo it just dropped to 45 degrees Celsius. Ooo Nice! I love my Apple Macbook Pro.
July 10th, 2007 at 1:43 pm
bucky…
just because you don’t know what “all of us guys” are talking about, doesn’t mean that you know what you are talking about. you have no clue what we’re experiencing but accuse us of mistreating our computers. i’ll have you know i’ve been a microsoft systems engineer for almost a decade, but am just new to macs. i am not treating my laptop improperly, you putz. no doubt the others on this thread are likewise not abusing their $2000 machines.
furthurmore - your post of a perfectly running machine on a thread where people are experiencing problems is useless. (btw - why did you have to download the smcfancontrol on a brand new laptop if you weren’t experiencing troubles? dubious!)
back to the discussion: i have found out that the shutdown dimmed screen is intrinsic to apple, and not a virus. i ran a ClamXav_1.0.8_Tiger virus scan and it is clean. the last three times the laptop has shutdown it has been shortly after unplugging from the magsafe, and when the battery indicates that it is at 96%…all three times. currently, i am plugged in and the magnet light is green - fully charged - but the battery meter now permanantly says 96%. it seems like more than a coincidence.
upon restarting the “report to apple” message box indicates that it is a kernel panic attack. i have talked to a local mac dealer and he knows EXACTLY what i’m talking about. his suggestion, since i am still under the one year warrantee, is to call apple and have them walk me through fixing it. i’ll update this thread as to the results.
as far as bucky goes…i hope he’s trolling for attention somewhere else. >8O(

update:
i ran the apple hardware test and the extended test from disk one, then called apple support and spoke with a very friendly (canadian) service rep. after explaining the situation, she ran me thru the basics.
since the issue seemed to be with running the computer unplugged, and there were no hardware issues from the tests, she figured it was the battery. (possibly aware that batteries ARE the issue)
we removed the battery, pressed power, inserted the battery, held opt+apple ikon+R+P+power button for a three-chimed startup. that resets the parameter ram, hardware components, and something to do with the AC adapter function.
we ran the disk utility application: repair disk permission, then verify disk.
trashed cache in library folder.
emptied trash.
i have been unplugged for 1/2 an hour, battery power is down to 79%, and no freeze or shutdown.
the rep also said that if the problem persists, then it most likely is a battery issue, and that they would send out a replacement.
i have to admit - never in ten years would i have ever have expected microsoft to give free telephone support, and to have fixed an issue without it costing a bundle…not to mention the spyware they would install on the computer without your permission.
kudos to apple for solving my issue, and much thanks to the Genius Computers tech in Cranbrook, BC for suggesting calling apple support without selling me norton antivirus, or an external hardrive for backup in case i needed to send the laptop in. more free apple advice!
(hey bucky! isn’t it amazing that apple support knew what to do with an issue of a customer abusing their computer? putz… at least now you know what to do if your santa rose bonks with a bad battery.)
good luck to everyone else out there who may be experiencing the same issues of a dimmed screen and forced shutdown while unplugged from their magsafe adapter.
cheers!

Hey Jermasides
I have the exact same problem as you, the screen shade coming down from top to bottom and then the message in several languages. I’ve got a a brand new Macbook Pro 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo running Mac OS 10.4.10. About ten minutes ago I was using it unplugged just using Excel and the screendimming thing happened. Thats the 3rd time since I bought it. Since going through all those things with the mactech, has it happened to you again?

Hi people, well it sounds like most of you have what i have…KERNAL PANICS, this is what happens when you see the grey screen with different languages asking to restart your computer. i had my 2.33ghz c2d 2 gigram macbook pro for a week only and they are replacing the logic board, wow i left the pc world to get away from the shitty hardware…what a joke. Its time to do something about this…i mean isnt it the squeeky wheel that gets the grease?

Hello everyone, checking in again. The latest Consumer Reports says that Apple’s repair rate is on par with Dell’s and most of the other laptop manufacturers, with Sony having the lowest repair rate. HOWEVER, Apple’s customer satisfaction with technical support and customer support is number 1 and far ahead of the rest of the laptop manufacturers. As shown in my original story, I was a very satisfied customer after they took care of me.
October 1st, 2007 at 4:50 pm
final follow-up:
i too have had excellent customer service with apple canada. the issues have been addressed and solved.
the battery is the culprit. the bad news is i have had the distinction of being sent two bad batteries out of four. it is such an amazing coincidence, that apple saw fit to accomodate my request of software in lieu of time wasted with tech support and purolator. (in the mail i received iWork ‘08 for free. my suggestion.)
when i bought my macbook pro in december ‘06, i also bought a spare battery. when the original battery started the shutdown problem, i replaced it with the spare and monitored for a month. i ran it down to 25% a few times. and cycled it once to 0%. never got a shutdown. so apple sent me a replacement for the original, and pre-paid purolater postage for the defunct battery to be returned. (return it in the specified timeframe or get charged for it! purolater came right to the door for pickup too.)
i wanted to check to see if the replacement was working properly, and it too shutdown - at 72%. i called them immediately, apple continued my case number, and we repeated the process. that’s when i pondered the possibility of software for frustration. they happliy agreed.
since then - 3 months have passed - i have not yet encountered a shutdown screen on either my original spare, or the second replacement battery they had sent.
during the conversations between support and i, it became evident that batteries had been the problem all along. (i too had reported the “kernel panic attack” bug to apple via their popup box numerous times, and the case file is rife with that error code). there have been “many returns”.
none of this has cost me one penny. phone support. deliveries. pickups for returns. and some bonus software for the inconvenience. besides all that, which is to be expected from a reputable company, their service was friendly and overwhelmingly accomodating. not begrudgingly facetious and manipulative.
good work fixing the problem, apple. i’m a pure convert now.
i hope this helps. cheers,
j

I’m having a problem…My 2.4 core 2 duo 2gb ram MB Pro…
My power indicator on my screen says I have a battery life of 99%. If I flip the computer over and touch the indicator all leds light up - full power as well.
If I’m plugged in the mbp works great, but once I unplug within 3 seconds the whole mac will die. No shutdowns, no reboot. Just *click* - off. If I’m unplugged I can try and turn it on but I’ll hear the mac start but before the chime I’ll hear the *click* - and then nothing.
I’ve been to the apple store 2 days ago and they couldn’t reproduce the problem. But now it’s more prominent since. I’m going back today to see what they say when I don’t let them go to the back room or plug it in first. LED’s don’t lie…something they made is defective. Either it’s my MBP or the battery…or both.
I’ll let you all know how it goes. I bought my MBP in Aug ‘07.
