random reboots
two weeks ago i bought a brand new off the shelf black macbook core duo from the apple store in toronto. it had battery problems (battery gave incorrect charging estimates and would not be recognized from time to time) and would reboot randomly when i closed it to put it to sleep.
i took advantage of my 14 day return and exchanged the computer for another. they transfered all my data over for me, which was nice. i thought my problems were over, until just now, i closed the lid and it rebooted!!
it hasn’t rebooted yet when i’ve been using it, just when it goes to sleep.
does anyone else have this? is this the same problem as RSS?

Have you downloaded the EFI Firmware update? This is not the same problem as RSS from what I’ve read. The description for the EFI update specifically addresses this problem and states that it will fix it.
Download it here:

Just talked with Apple support and they know nothing other then the firmware updates that have been talked about on this site. Seems that they are not going to do anything about the hardware problems yet… and I just ordered the Macbook duo2 core intel. So I am keeping my fingers crossed and will be trying that test to max out the processors. By the way Apple support said that it is perfectly OK to do that test and will not effect the warranty. They know about it. Hmmmm, interesting that they know about it, but don’t know anything else isn’t it?…

Perhaps your computer already had it installed if it came out after the upgrade. However, the main question is why where you doing it? Is your computer acting up or not?!

Sorry, I see that it does. Well… seems you need to call Apple and demand to talk to their higher level help.

creativity apple style shouldn’t have to cost so much; it’s time we asked apple what they mean by creativity if the computers just switch off or fall asleep; it’s a form of cencorship

I have this problem with my new MacBook, has anyone found a solution?

This occurred on my new black MacBook, purchased in early Feb. 2007. It occurred multiple times in one day, then subsided, then did it a once on two other occasions randomly. I reset the SMC unit (for Macbook, shut down, pull battery/power cable, hold power button for 5 seconds, reconnect all and startup). It has not done it yet. I am crossing my fingers. I did not need the EFI update.

I just got a macbook about a month ago (as an aside: I’m a unix geek forced to mac it because of company software) and I should have bought a toshiba and hacked the osx install to run on it.
I have the reboot issue. Yes I updated my software, firmware, ya da ya da ya da. That’s computer troubleshooting 101.
What I had discovered, thanks to my wonderful web browser (flock.com) was that the OS is forcing a reboot. If it were a hardware issue, my browser wouldn’t be asking me if I wanted to close all tabs before I exited.
I was at work, doing stuff, got called away for about 2 hours, came back and there was my browser asking me the question and the mac dialog box telling me that the reboot failed. No one could have issued a reboot because my screen saver is password protected and I fire that up before I leave the computer alone.
Did some testing at home as well. If I leave the computer running, I’ll come back to it in sleep mode with at the login screen.
What I did to prevent it is that I went to the power management configuration and set the computer to sleep in one hour.
Since then, I have not had a reboot issue.
From a design standpoint, the macbook’s do not seem to be able to dissipate the heat in an “always on” power management configuration, so the OS seems to be forcing the reboot in order to put it in a mode where I can’t tell it to stay on.
What’s really annoying is that after the macbook heats up too much because I’m actually using the thing the OS goes into panic mode and tells me to hold the power button down.
So, if you’ve tried everything and still have the problem try a laptop cooling pad, or let your computer take a 10 min. nap every hour or so so it doesn’t get overworked

I have to add, in response to my last post here, that someone was playing trixies on me.
If you do all of the updates, and still have the problem be sure to check the security settings to make sure your computer isn’t being told to log off after a certain period of inactivity.
Ya, I feel reeally smart.

I have had random restarts when closing lid running on battery. It does not happen often enough to warrant a call to Apple yet. I personally think it might be a power management gitch in the software but that’s just a guess.
