I have had random restarts when closing lid running on battery. It does not happen often enough to warrant a call to Apple yet. I personally think it might be a power management gitch in the software but that's just a guess.

I have to add, in response to my last post here, that someone was playing trixies on me.

If you do all of the updates, and still have the problem be sure to check the security settings to make sure your computer isn't being told to log off after a certain period of inactivity.

Ya, I feel reeally smart.

I just got a macbook about a month ago (as an aside: I'm a unix geek forced to mac it because of company software) and I should have bought a toshiba and hacked the osx install to run on it.

I have the reboot issue. Yes I updated my software, firmware, ya da ya da ya da. That's computer troubleshooting 101.

What I had discovered, thanks to my wonderful web browser (flock.com) was that the OS is forcing a reboot. If it were a hardware issue, my browser wouldn't be asking me if I wanted to close all tabs before I exited.

I was at work, doing stuff, got called away for about 2 hours, came back and there was my browser asking me the question and the mac dialog box telling me that the reboot failed. No one could have issued a reboot because my screen saver is password protected and I fire that up before I leave the computer alone.

Did some testing at home as well. If I leave the computer running, I'll come back to it in sleep mode with at the login screen.

What I did to prevent it is that I went to the power management configuration and set the computer to sleep in one hour.

Since then, I have not had a reboot issue.

From a design standpoint, the macbook's do not seem to be able to dissipate the heat in an "always on" power management configuration, so the OS seems to be forcing the reboot in order to put it in a mode where I can't tell it to stay on.

What's really annoying is that after the macbook heats up too much because I'm actually using the thing the OS goes into panic mode and tells me to hold the power button down.

So, if you've tried everything and still have the problem try a laptop cooling pad, or let your computer take a 10 min. nap every hour or so so it doesn't get overworked ;)

This occurred on my new black MacBook, purchased in early Feb. 2007. It occurred multiple times in one day, then subsided, then did it a once on two other occasions randomly. I reset the SMC unit (for Macbook, shut down, pull battery/power cable, hold power button for 5 seconds, reconnect all and startup). It has not done it yet. I am crossing my fingers. I did not need the EFI update.

creativity apple style shouldn't have to cost so much; it's time we asked apple what they mean by creativity if the computers just switch off or fall asleep; it's a form of cencorship

Sorry, I see that it does. Well... seems you need to call Apple and demand to talk to their higher level help.
