apple allowing returns of recently purchased defective macbooks

in an earlier post here i mentioned that my brand new macbook core 2 duo randomly rebooted on sleep. using the 14 return policy, i had it exchanged at the applestore. but surprise surprise the new one does exactly the same thing.

so i called applecare and told them the deal, and mentioned that the problem is all over the internet and i knew that apple was aware of it. i then said i wanted a full refund on the machine. the lady didn’t argue with me at all, and right away gave me a case number to take it back. she told me to take it back to the store and give them the number and they would refund it, even though it is beyond the 14 days.

i found it suspicious how easy it was. i think they know about it and are trying to reduce the damage by not pissing us off.

so if you have a defective macbook, demand a refund!

I bought my Macbook in June. It’s been in for repair 6 times. Four times for the overheating and shutting down. (One of those times it took 15 days to get back.) The fifth time it was for a logic board and optimal (?) board replacement; the computer would not turn on. And 5 minutes after getting my computer back from the Apple store, my hard drive crashed and I lost everything. They offered to give me a 120-gb HD to replace my 80. Like that’s supposed to help. EVERY time they have refused to replace my computer, and every time I have demanded one.

I thought it was only affecting my computer until I read this message board. We have all been duped by Apple into thinking it’s a unique problem. It’s not. It’s affecting THOUSANDS of us.

DO NOT go into some class action lawsuit with 100 other people. You will not get any money; just some stupid coupon while the class-action attorney gets MILLIONS at your expense (and everyone else involved). Find an attorney who will take your case on contingency (where you don’t pay him, but he takes 33% of the settlement), and sue Apple individually. They WILL settle with you, because it’ll cost too much money to defend each case. This is the legal advice from a respected attorney that I trust, which I’m currently in the process of doing.

And keep these message boards going. It’s the only way we can protect ourselves from Apple.

I lost over 200 hours of work that hadn’t been backed up on my new MacBook. I’m determined to prevent other people from suffering the same feat.

    Hi all,

I bought my MacBook in August and had the random shutting down problem start in October. It wasn’t often, but recently it’s been every other day. So I called Apple Service to get my options. They actually informed me of a FirmWare update patch that appears in your software update wndow. This patch supposedly fixes the problem. I’m downloading it now. So we’ll see.

    Signed,
    Hopeful in LA

disa, beware! When I ran the FirmWare update my computer completely froze and I had to take it into the store to have fixed. Mind you, it took me three days to get an apointment, I was late by 5 min. to my first one and they moved on, so I had to wait another two days to get in. Hopefully you did not experience this frustration…

I bought the spanking new base model iBook intel duoCore 15″ for my wifes Christmas. We bought it from a premium reseller in the UK at the end of November in anticipation of the rush. Of course I took it home and opened the box and quickly plugged it in and everything was fine. I then wrapped it for Christmas….
….Christmas day after 20mins it shutdown, then again and again.
Two days later(when they opened again) I took it back to the shop to demand that I get a new replacement. They say it was outside the 14 day returns policy and can only offer to repair it as Apple will not accept the return from them. Not happy. They still have it after 2 weeks and I will not get it back for another week.

I’m now double stuffed because the reseller can blame apple and apple are saying it’s the shops responsibility.

    Unhappy,

    Brian
