Im so annoyed!!!! So I had to write a rant. My white MacBook arrived gleaming and beautifully new and shining in October 2006. I had gone to John Lewis to buy an i-book, but I was advised that, for just a ‘bit’ more money, I could have the Brand Spanking New MacBook, fresh from the makers at Apple. A bit too fresh if you ask me. Not ready for the shelves more like. (er where have we heard that before.. i-pod, i-pod shuffle etc etc)
Anyway. Yes before long it kept shitting sorry, shutting down randomly. I own my own business, so my laptop IS my business. It’s pretty damn important! Fast forward to March 2007. I finally get my arse in gear and phone John Lewis, who tell me they can send it away to be fixed. No good at all! How am I supposed to work? So on JL reccomendation, I call Apple and explain that I want a replacement, since Ive heard there might be an inherent problem with the MacBook. Mr Apple Helpline says that he has never heard of such problems and where did I hear that? So I went away feeling that maybe I was making this stuff up, and perhaps the problem occured when I dropped my morning croissant on it, or something. Ant then … then I found this website. I can only say two things. 1) hurrah 2) In your face Mr Apple. Im off to call them again. And this time they are not getting away with it.
Actually any suggestions welcome. should I
A) use the reccommended download to cure the problem of RSS on the Apple website?

B)Get a replacement from JL/Apple?
Good luck and spread the word xRR
This is more a problem with the Intel Core Duo than it is the MacBook or Apple products for that matter.
We have several Dell Latitude D620’s with the same random shutdown and random restart issues. Dell is fixing this by replacing the logic board on the laptops in question.
No it is NOT a problem with the Intel chip. I have several clients with Dell E1505, Dell Insperon series and Toshiba Satellite Core duo and Core 2 duos running XP and Vista without a single problem. And every one else I know that has a non-apple core based notebook does not have these problems. If the hardware to support the processor is correctly designed (meaning heat sinking) it works great. When style has a higher priority than engineering (think Edsel) you get a good looking failure.
Bad logic boards with power management issues have been plaguing Macs for at least three generations of equipment now, G4 notebooks, G5 iMacs, and now Intel-based MacBooks. What’s weird is that the problem seems to be getting worse, even with the much more efficient Intel dual core processors. Apple’s product developers either are in complete denial or don’t care because they think the cool factor of Mac products will bail them out.
GFC has it right!!! I have a May 2006 Macbook Pro (which has turned out to be anything but), which has had a series of issues that seem to be heading towards the logic board or fans or inverters or… whatever. The point is, the Macbook Pro seems like a real POS compared to the Powerbook that sits next to it and hearing Apple Support say things like “blah, blah, blah … down for four days or more ..” is giving me a serious case of Apple heartburn.
I think the company is in denial and I hope that more sites like this one, shake them out of it. The “cool factor” and OS X is starting not to cut it real well, when I begin to add up the cost of this laptop and the time factor and the aggravation of dealing with it.
Much more of this and “It just dosen’t work anymore,” might well become Apple’s new tagline.
HI
Just thought I’d say, I downloaded the new firmware on the apple updates and it fixed the RSS problem. for now….
Hi,
I had the random shutdown problem, and I downloaded the SMC firmware update, and since then my MacBook is simply works and great. I’m in the middle of heady calculations, both core is working on 100% for more than one week, and no problems experienced.
I have the exact same frustrating experiences. Especially with the guy i bought it from who acts as though i am some crazy women with pyschosomatic symtems.
Anyway how do I download the SMC firmware?
thanks
I have a new black Mac book pro lap top. The CD drive won’t seen to recognise a double sided CD/DVD disc – in this case The Seger sessions by Bruce Springsteen but it does play on my older white mac book lap top and on all my other cd players. Is this a problem with the new MAC BOOK CD drive technology ? I can’t work out a logical reason why this problem should be occuring as the same disc can also be read by my sony vaio which is dual core. Any ideas would be welcome
I have the G5 iMac and have replaced the power supply, logic board, HD and optical drive. I just discovered today that I have to replace the power supply and logic board again. Apple Support has not been supportive. I wih we had an Apple store in VT so I could bring the computer to an actual person.
I have a macbook pro which randomly restarts. Have had it at the service centre 6 times (1. no problem found, 2. new top case, 3. heat sync, 4. no problem found, 5. new logic board, 6. replaced ram) Spent many hours on the phone to apple (customer relations). Poor service, no help…”you’ll need to take it to the service centre” again!!!! I’ve done the firmware updates etc etc. Time for a replacement machine!!!!
