I just started getting random shutdowns on battery power with my warrantied MacBook… sigh.
I made the mistake of buying one of the fist generation MacBooks (see the sordid story at www.brokenmacbook.com) but once it was replaced, it has been running trouble free. Just started getting the random shutdown issue this week.
After a shutdown, when I try to restart nothing, its dead. After about 5 minutes, it will start again, but only long enough for me to start a browser and then off it goes again. If I plug the MacBook into an power outlet, it runs again without shutting down.
The last time this happened, the battery indicator read that there was 11% charge remaining. I think something is faulty in the indicator and that is why I am getting the shutdowns without any “Battery Low” warnings… Unfortuantely, there does not appear to be any updates to solve the problem.
Until then, I am stuck to a power outlet…
Have you tried what I describe in my “temporary fix” post ? I think you should !
Thanks. Yes, I did a PMU reset. It seems to work fine for a week after a crash, then down it goes again… without any real heavy use.
I’m starting to regret, again, switching to a Mac. Next time I’ll order a cheap laptop and run Ubuntu…
This sounds like a battery issue. Try to take it to an authorized service provider and they will most likely be able to resolve it.
I’m having this same problem. I’ve used mine mostly on AC power, so I don’t know how long this has been going on. Recently I’ve started using it on battery more and it’s totally unreliable. Unfortunately I’m a few months out of warranty. Anybody had any success with this apart from the PMU reset?
I am not having this issue too much anymore, though I think that is because I have been plugged in for the most part… I’ll start running on battery power again to see, but I just bought the extended warranty so have another two years of support… unfortunately, I think I will need it… I just started to get the screen flicker problem again! I posted about it over on http://brokenmacbook.com/node/43
Yes, me to….
instead of going to sleep, instant shut down at 15% or 20% of battery life..
Too bad I live in Brazil and the next apple store is in a couple of 1000 km ahead..
