macbook lcd replacement – LCD cracked on the Macbook – What to do….
Well just over a year ago I started this site about the Macbook’s random shutdown ‘feature’ – it’s been a great site and thanks to everything for their contributions. Well last weekend, we accidentally dropped our beloved Macbook on the corner of the coffee table – the screen landed face down and here is what we ended up with:

After calling Apple, they said that Applecare woud do us no good and it was going to be right at $1,000 USD to fix the LCD panel. A good friend of mine suggested EBay, so last Sunday I ordered for $150 a replace screen from this guy on EBay – it arrived yesterday and last night. After following these awesome macbook lcd replacement instructions and just over an hour of my time, I have a perfectly working Macbook again. Saved myself over $800 from what Apple wanted to charge me – just wanted to put it out there that it can be fixed pretty easily yourself – so if you Macbook gets a cracked LCD, it’s fixable and definitely worth doing yourself – Cheers! Matthew

my mac notebook cracked and i did nothing wrong. didnt drop it or leave a pen in it like the store said could have happened. they said it would cost 755 to fix
January 15th, 2008 at 2:40 am
I dropped mine from my desk chair. It was still in the carry case(which Apple sold me) and did nothing to protect it. I went into an apple store and got the same story. Tomorrow I’m going to go online and find out what other options I have. I’m pretty good at fixing things providing instructions to do so are clear. Thanks for letting us know that there are other options besides giving our souls to apple for a repair that my apple care should have covered considering that it costed $100. My macbook is only 8 months old!
January 29th, 2008 at 4:44 am
Mine’s definitely prettier… i got the top 1.5″… and it kinda forms like a u/v shape across the center. strange, the lowest for a screen i’ve seen is 400… where’d you find $150 on ebay?
February 4th, 2008 at 1:32 am
My macbook fell off the coach, I went into an apple store and they said it would be at least $1000 to fix it. Then I started to ask people and they said to go to ebay where yes screens can be found for $150! Now all I have to do is find someone who can fix it cheap.
I have only have my macbook for about 2 months, will apple fix it still? If not can I still buy the extended warranty and if yes, does anyone who if the warranty will cover a lame accident?

Walt,
I saw good deals at http://www.laptopscreen1.com
They also have an eBay store, that might be where Matt got his screen.
March 27th, 2008 at 4:24 am
Hey, just google “macbook screen replacement” and you’ll come up with all sorts of places who will do a complete overnight screen replacement for about $400, including overnight shipping. Check out Techrestore.com, Macservice.com, and Microreplay.com
April 1st, 2008 at 2:37 am
Sarah, that seems pretty expensive actually – $400 – I paid $150 for the screen and put it in myself, was the $400 including putting in the replacement LCD? Just curious…
May 10th, 2008 at 5:59 pm
Thanks Cole,
I looked again at ebay and I got a used one for $60 shipped. Put it in, and It works! so maybe its not perfect, but its better than it was.
May 27th, 2008 at 5:35 am
My screen also broke without provocation. I opened it while it was on a coffee table, and after about 15 seconds it cracked in several places, without me touching the computer at all. It was all very ridiculous. I am still using it, since the cracks aren’t deal breakers yet.
Thanks for the cheaper replacement info too! Apple said it would be 755 to fix it!
May 28th, 2008 at 5:22 pm
Mine cracked with a small tap on a table, now it cracked everywhere. Has anyone successfully replaced it yet? These instructions (http://www.screentekinc.com/lcd-removal-instructions_en,macbook.shtml) seem to be for taking the screen off. How do i put the new one on?
September 26th, 2008 at 3:07 am
Oh, please. Your LCD did not crack because you looked at it funny. The LCD cracks when you drop the computer or smack it against a hard object (perhaps in your bag) or plop it down of the table really hard.
October 2nd, 2008 at 8:42 am
The LCD cracks when you drop the computer<<
Baloney. Hundreds of people the same problem with defective Macbook screens. The same thing happened to me, and I didn’t bang or drop it.
Apple’s policy is to not honor the warranty for LCD problems.
My policy is to sue companies that rip me off. Let Apple spend $2500 in attorney fees in order for them to defend against my attempt to make them pay for $750 in repairs.

Mine cracked all by itself one day as well. I shut it, went to work, came back with a giant crack in the upper left corner. Since then it has propagated all the way across the screen. Ordered a new screen for $159 from iResQ.com.
October 16th, 2008 at 10:46 pm
Jared once your screen comes in and you install it could you let us know how things went?
October 17th, 2008 at 7:43 am
I had the same thing happen as Jared. I’ve only had it a little over a month! I made the mistake of touching it when I noticed it, which only made it worse and through the course of this evening it’s gotten so bad, that the screen is almost entirely black. This is obviously defective. I will CRY if they don’t replace it with my Applecare!!!!
October 17th, 2008 at 7:44 am
Oh, and as Brian said, please let us know how it works out when you replace it yourself.
October 21st, 2008 at 3:44 pm
I cracked my LCD, too. I was devastated but I’m starting to feel a little better now after all these success stories.
But I was wondering from all these people that bought replacement screens … is there a specific part number I should look for on eBay like “LP133WX1-TLA1″ or “A1181″ or “MA699LL/A” ? Or will any glossy WXGA 13.3″ do? I’d hate to buy a LCD I’m not happy with.
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:39 pm
Although the instructions you link at the top are pretty good many people will find that removing the hinge cover without removing the screen assembly will break it and it can also be very difficult to reinstall. Please consider posting our instructions which are much more thorough.

hi guys thank you very much for the valuable info you provided through that thread. I have cracked my Macbook LCD screen too. This happened again on its own like some of you said!! I still don’t believe how it happened. My macbook is only 9 months old!! Apple told me it will cost around $800 to be fixed.
I would like to ask those of you who suggested some of the agents who provide repair services like iResQ.com. ,Techrestore.com, Macservice.com, and Microreplay.com.
Can anyone tell me please if they have tried these services? Are they trustworthy ?
I just find the repair prices worryingly cheap!!!!!!!!
thanks

The macbook and macbook pro’s do have verry sensitive screens, and in some cases it cracks from just shutting the machine. When opening the macbook you find a big crack from top to bottom. I have filed now a few cases but if you are interested in getting on this list, please go to http://www.macbook-pro-cracked.com for more information, pictures etc.! Also mybiggestcomplaint.com stores hundreds of people that have this same problem, the screen of macbook and macbook pro sucks! Just like the attitude of apple.

all great replies. i have new titatimnium macbook 16″ slipped out of my hands while putting one sleeve. bottom corner dented and top corner dented and screen cracked. so it seems easy to get a replacement LCD however if the frame ie titanium part is bent, how can that be fixed and will the screen fit inside it? also if anyone knows the part no. for the screen for the new macbook 16″ that would be great! Thanks.

I have a cracked LCD display but I am not sure which screen in ebay i have to buy (specification). The model is pretty common, widely sold on 2007, 13″, white MacBook 2.1, processor 2 Ghz, 1280 x 800, 32 bits. Can someone tell me which lcd screen i have to look for?
Thanks!!

Bought a Mac Book Air in December 08 and last week my screen was cracked by no fault of mine. No drop No water. I had it by my bed side and notice red and blue lines vertically on the screen ( to the right) I called Apple and went through the walk through. He led me through many procedures and the lines and darkness got worse. I have AppleCare. I also
bought the product through Mac Mall on a payment plan. I be damn if I am paying for a $900.00 service for the damn computer if my warranties don’t cover something I didn’t do. This has happened with my 2002 IBook and I sucked up and paid for the repair of the LCD. I won’t do this again. One the people at Apple get your product under warranty they always say it is your fault and they won’t ship it back until you pay for repairs. Or they charge you a minimum of $100.00 to send it back and then you have to find someone to repair it.

My Macbook screen was replaced in just $70, and same thing with this apple service center asked me to pay $700( ya rite). I just find some laptop repair shop and they replace it with new one ( may be black market) but works perfectly. Sometime staying in countries like Indonesia can be blessing. But i tell u this apple fucking stores sucks..always try to rip u off.

Hello,
I have a macbook white 13 inch. My mom got it for me back in february and in march the screen cracked. I did drop it one time but it didnt mess up the time I dropped it. About 2 days later it was sitting as I was burning a CD (maybe it cracked because I was burning a copy of Solange’s cd lol) and next thing i knew I looked over after hearing the iTunes CD finished indicator i saw a crack on the top left corner and bottom right. I took it to apple and was told it would be 780 to repair it. I’m glad I found this forum but are there any instructions for installing a new one? I see the instructions for removal, but is it the same steps reversed for installing the replacement screen?
July 7th, 2009 at 11:40 am
I installed a new screen as directed and the laptop boots and makes a buzzing noise, lights up and then goes black after about 2 seconds. Any suggestions? I am freaking out
July 25th, 2009 at 8:53 pm
I changed my screen. The screen is working but my wireless connectivity is intermittent. I was very careful with antenna wiring, but unfortunately couldnt work in the hinge at the bottom of the screen ( which reveals the 3 screws ). I dont know if that had anything to do with my antenna not being very functional.
Also another thing I am seeing is that if I bring it close to my AP it syncs up and then I can move farther away and the connectivity is maintained. But if I start the computer from far, it does not connect! Does that offer any clue.
Thanks for posting about how to replace LCD and I am also hoping some one out there know whats wrong with my wireless and can suggest what I should do.
Thanks

After reading all these stories, my notebook with the broken LCD started playing music (I freaked), this of course was after I decided to muddle around and see what happened. So sure enough in a matter of seconds, I’m jamming. I about flipped back in my chair thinking “What the f***?” All I know is that I’m not about to pay $900 for repair– not gonna happen apple. So here’s my philosophy: I pay you an ASSLOAD of money to buy a laptop, and as a paying customer (with applecare, mind you) they can show some appreciation and hook it up by fixing the darn thing.Am I being irrational??

This morning the LCD on my monitor ‘cracked’ on the inside. The screen is completely white with black lines all over. Apple also told me it would be several hundreds of dollars to fix.
Can an external monitor do the trick until a new screen can be purchased?
If you have no technical computer experience how easy is it to take out the monitor and replace on your own? And how do you know which monitor to buy?

My 10 month old daughter pinched the screen and cracked it. It only had a 1/2″ crack that was barely noticeable. Took it to the apple store to have the crashed hard drive replaced and they said they would take a look at the screen. Got it back and the crack spread like 4 inches still doesnt look too bad. Gonna replace it myself considering how much everyone is saying the apple store will charge you.

I was typing up a paper at the end of my when my mac screen cracked. It started as a little black dot. I actually thought it was a bug or something, but it would not wipe off. Later that night when I opened up the screen again, it was gone. I forgot completely about it until opened it to use it once I got home in June and it was COVERED in dead pixels. I took it to the mac store where I bought it and they claimed I dropped it. I said I didn’t. They said maybe I had closed a pen inside of it. I said no. He then asked me if I had a pet. I answered “yes a dog” wondering what that had to do with anything. He then told me maybe my dog had jumped onto the desk where I keep my macbook and stepped on it. My response? That I doubted my 125 pound german shepherd was practicing climbing maneuvers on my desk while I wasn’t home. In that case, I am fairly certain that more than just my laptop screen would be cracked. I argued with this guy for an hour. When he claimed it would cost me 800 dollars to fix it I told him I loved my Mac but I wasn’t paying 800 buicks for a screen to a computer that originally only cost me 1000. He told me instead of sending it off they would fix it in store for only 400 dollars. I would have preferred that my warranty cover it like I think it SHOULD, but 400 dollars was more livable than 800. So dont give up! Ask them to fix it in store! The turn around rate for mine was 24 hours. Originally I was going to pay 800 and get it back in 4-6 weeks and that changed to 400 and get it back the next day. Apple is just out for money. Dont be afraid to argue
