CrapBook

I got my MacBook for Christmas of 2006. Now it’s July 2008 and I’ve recently started having the “Random Shutdown” problem. It started I think late June 08 doing it every so often and now it’s doing it whenever I unplug it from the Power Adapter! Today I was just surfing the net (while my laptop wasn’t plugged into the wall) and it shut off on it’s own and when I tried to turn it back on it would make the start up sound and then shut off again. It had about 30% full battery and it almost seemed like there was no more battery. So I had to plug it back in to the outlet and now it’s working fine.
My computer does have the tendency to get pretty hot and the fans go really fast when it gets hot but I’m not sure if the temperature is the problem.
I still do LOVE my MacBook though, it has lots of important documents and important passwords saved and it looks pretty but if this shutting down thing keeps happening I might lose my love for Apple.

The reason why this is taking place is because you need get a new battery. The battery is shot and is now not syncing correctly with the computer. I had the same problem with my MB Pro and the battery solved the problem.

i’m having the exact same problem , the only difference is that my crapbook does randomly shutdown while its plugged to the outlet!
so its not a battery issue ..

I purchased a Macbook in Dec 2006 and I have random shutdowns as well. However, mine usually happen when you close the lid to put it in hybernate. The laptop can be plugged in, high charge, or low charge, it makes not difference. It is actually really funny, all of a sudden you hear that Mac sound like when it starts up…. But it is very bad, it is supposed to be hybernating not shutting down, but it only does this about half the time.

The other problems include random parts of the OS or software not working so I have to restart it. For example, all of a sudden your F keys don’t do anything.

On top of that, it seems to overheat often, even though it is on a desk and not surrounded by anything blocking the vents, it starts to churn up like an airplane engine and everything runs SUPER slow during this time. Shutting it down and waiting till it cools is the only solution.

I haven’t installed any crazy changes or software, and have done all the mac updates possible to date. Running 10.4.1 Have also done all the disk repair / permission repair, and sudo periodic daily/weekly/monthly – stuff, that has no affect.

Also, I have an Airport extreme and their latest firmware update to that slows down the entire network to an unusable speed. Had to revert the firmware.

I have to say that the Apples have their plus points (the design looks great and they have slot load DVD drives, magnetic power cords, etc..), and they have no viruses, so that is pretty good!

So for now, it is reboot/shutdown and cross fingers =)

I’m facing the same issue. Unfortunately, Apple doesn’t have any actual stores/tech services in the country where I live, so I’ve got to rely on “authorised techs” to do the job. It’s been fine for the 10 months I’ve owned it (bought it in Dec. 2008), so I’m kind of surprised at the randomness of this problem.

I to am having similar problems with my Macbook shutting down. It doesn’t seem to matter if it is plugged in or not. Sometimes I will return to the computer after a few minutes, when normally it would have gone into sleep mode, but instead it would have completely shut down. Not only has it shut down, but I am unable to turn it back on. I’ll hold the power key down for longer then normal and nothing… I’ve taken to removing the battery for several minutes and then trying again. This usually does the trick. It used to only happen randomly but now it seems to happen once a month. Anyone have any suggestions?
