Seeking Australian users experiencing MacBook RSS

I am currently preparing a submission to a major Australian current affairs television show, seeking action from Apple for two friends experiencing MacBook Random Shutdown Syndrome.  They have both purchased white Macbooks between November 2006 and January 2007, both had repairs during initial 12 month warranty, and both have continued to experience the issue beyond warranty.

The submission will benefit from additional case studies.  If you are interested in being mentioned, referred to, or even appearing in, such a current affairs story, please email me your story and contact details to:

macbookrss@gmail.com

Even if you are not interested in public recognition or naming, I’d be happy to hear your story and will, of course, respect anonymity for anyone desiring it.

Many thanks for your involvement.

I have recently had the same problem in the last 5 weeks. My Macbook pro randomly shuts down when it is just running off the battery even when it is fully charged. I have had about 20 shutdowns in the last 3 weeks. Unfortunately I was too late to get the extended warranty when I called apple 6 months ago to purchase so I am stuffed! I have been using macs for over 12 years and this is the first time I have had any major problems. The laptop is only 1 and a half years old and its failing me. Come on apple this is why we buy your products because they have a track record of being reliable. The internet is riddled with 1000′s upon 1000′s of people suffering from the same problem. Its obvious that it is related to the cut off sensor kicking in due to the heat sink. I think its time you did a extended repair recall to all those suffering this problem! Extremely Disappointed Apple!

Not sure if i’m too late but my macbook is also experiencing some random shutdowns and goes to sleep on its own. I suspect it might be a similar situation to what you have described. I bought my macbook in december ’07 its been trouble free till now. I was cheap and didn’t get extended apple care so I’m out of warranty now. it has only happened a handful of times and hopefully it was just the exception. feel free to email me if you need any additional information

The problem is not limited to MacBooks. It has been with the iMacs since the G5 days. Sometimes it shows up after a software update. Sometimes it is triggered by something as simple as a flash video in a browser window, not necessarily when the machine is warm. EFI on a PC is a nice idea, but I suspect Apple has borked its implementation. It takes very little to drive the power management system screwy on Macs.

    Bought Macbook May 2007
RSS logic board replacement Jan 2008
    Rss returned Feb 2009
Took it into nextbyte who had it for 2 weeks and returned it with a new top case courtesy of Apple.
Turned it on and it RSSed immediately
returned it to Nextbyte. 2 days later they could not diagnose the problem so suggested i pay for a logic board replacement to see if it solved the issue.

Solved the issue by taking the battery out and running it on the wall pack.
No RSS issues so far but it runs slow and the wireless range is limited. Turns out it was a PCM failure.

Thanks Apple i always wanted a desktop with a 13.3″ screen and a new topcase.

    This may help you!

Manveer, that doesn’t help at all. It’s talking about a specific fix to a specific problem nearly three years ago. What people are describing here is a problem across a range of Mac products that result from a defective design. And Apple, as it often does, is completely ignoring the issue.

This is an ongoing major problem with the design and manufacturing quality of Apple MacBook Pro’s and iMac’s… especially the early first generation intel models with the ATI X1600 graphic chip… Here’s a link to my dying – now dead – MacBook Pro story page: http://www.johnvlang.com/MacBookPro-ATI-issue.html At the end there are links to various Apple forum threads etc. that cover the issue(s). There’s also a link to a law firm in California, USA that’s looking into the issue(s) SFMS Law… so there might be a class action against Apple… meanwhile i have a useless piece of $crap from cr~ Apple…

i bought a macbook in June 2008 and did not take the extended warranty thinking that no issue occurs with APPLE unfortunately my macbook started shuttting down intermittently and after i switch it on again it is live hardly for 5 mins.
taking t apple care in 2 days.

Does the RSS trigger events in the system log? I have an intel Macbook that just shutsdown with absolutely nothing in any logs.
